Biotechnology - Opportunities

Scientific breakthroughs, extensive research, substantial investments, and enhanced technology
have turned the biotechnology industry into a $40 billion dollar industry that continues to
grow.   North Carolina is well positioned to benefit from, and become a leader in, the
biotechnology industry.

Education
The Triangle’s major research universities and large community college system are well-respected
educational institutions, and North Carolina has already capitalized on these strengths.   For
example, initiatives such as the BioWork training program promote building a highly skilled
workforce with adequate on-the-job experience.   In this way, biotechnology becomes a
source of jobs for displaced workers.

Private/University Partnerships
The Technology Transfer Office are a strong institutional component that should be utilized to
the fullest extent.   These partnerships can also be extended to other colleges and universities in
the state as part of an integrated effort to connect with high-tech production and
manufacturing in many industries.

Bio-manufacturing
Bio-manufacturing ranks third nationwide for bioprocess manufacturing, and it is one of the
state’s main strengths.   This growing sector has the potential to create good paying jobs for
high school and community college graduates, provided they have the appropriate training.
